Tapas represents an integral part of the Portuguese and Spanish culture and lifestyle. Originated from the practice of placing a slice of jamon serrano (cured ham) on top of a glass of sherry to keep the flies away, tapas is the Spanish word for cover or lid.
Things certainly have changed. Today, tapas is synonymous with appetizers or starters but are unlimited as to size. Consequently, they may comprise an entire meal. Tapas can be either solid or liquid (as a soup might also be a tapas) and are unbounded as to their variety.
Although quintessentially Portuguese and Spanish, tapas has become a staple in elegant English dining and is very popular with Londoners.
Sangria is a wine punch which originated in Spain and Portugal. The word sangria comes from the Spanish sangre meaning blood.
